Have you ever heard of the Compacting Movement?
I hadn’t either until not long ago but I’ve got to admit that the whole concept just totally fascinated me.
What is compacting? After looking into it due to much curiosity on my part, I’ve learned:
The basics of compacting are ...
1. To recycle
2. To reduce clutter and waste
3. To simplify
Pretty much what it is, is that you use what you have if possible [figure out new ways to re-use things instead of buying new!]
This saves money, not to mention helps to save our earth [re-using/recycling helps to reduce waste - less stuff going into landfills.]
It seems that there are people who have made a pledge for an entire year to buy nothing new with some exceptions such as to name a few ...
1. Food/Drink
2. Medication/Personal Items [some things you just need!]
3. New underwear [who wants to buy these used? Ewwww! Ha! ha!]
Basically it is things that are not absolutely not necessary to have.
It almost reminds me of one of my favorite sayings which is;
"Use it up, wear it out - make it do or do without."
How are some ways help those who’ve committed to compacting?
1. Borrow [if you need an item that you’d only use once or twice, see if you could borrow the item from someone.]
2. Barter
3. Use Craig’s list or Freecycle
4. Buy used [think thrift shops such as Salvation Army thrift stores, Goodwill stores and perhaps even consignment shops.]
I’m sure I haven’t included everything here but at least you get the gest of it anyways.
I love the concept of this but could I actually do it myself and commit to an entire year?
Not sure I really could but love to follow blogs where people are trying!
