How to make your own yeast :) and other Musings....

First of all I want to comment on Tammys Easy Stuffed Peppers......Another keeper for sure!  I couldn't believe how my 2 dds loved them as they are not fussy for cooked green peppers......I have made stuffed peppers before and they barley touched them but these WOW.  I am looking forward to trying her Chicken Pizza this Friday night for supper.

How to make your own Yeast......I was looking on the internet about making your own yeast cakes, my mother wanted to make some but I couldn't find it anywhere. I did however find this recipe for making your own yeast:

    http://www.recipegoldmine.com/scratch/scratch.html

Everlasting Yeast

1 quart warm potato water
1/2 cake yeast or 1/2 tablespoon dry yeast
1 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons granulated sugar
2 tablespoons flour

Stir in all ingredients and put in a warm place to raise until ready to mix for baking. Leave small amount of Everlasting Yeast for the next time you make bread. Keep in cool place and add to the Everlasting Yeast all of the above ingredients except the yeast. Do this each time and you will never run out of yeast. Now add the Everlasting Yeast that you took out and make the bread the way you always do.

I believe my mother is going to try this and to be quite honest I am tempted to try this as well. I was also looking in an old cookbook which my mother had given me quite some time ago and there was an added fact at the bottom of the page which said this about homemade yeast:

"It was believed by some of the greatest chefs of Europe that the best yeast for making bread was potato yeast. To prepare this, old-time cooks would soak 3 yeast cakes in a cup of hot water while boiling 7 good-sized potatoes. When the potatoes were soft they(potates),and one quart of the water in which they were boiled, were put through a colander. To this , a teaspoon of salt , 2 teaspoons sugar, and the hot yeast water were added. This was stored in a stone jar in a warm area overnight and then used the next day for baking."

Pretty interesting and frugal stuff eh? I make alot of homemade breads/rolls etc and these 2 recipes are frugal enough that it wouldn't hurt for me to experiment .....matter of fact as I am typing this I am thinking yes, I am going to try this and today and I will post the results tomorrow for you all .

When I make this yeast recipe and boil up the potaoes, the potatoes will not go to waste. I will whip them up and then I drop the mashed whipped potatoes by spoonfulls on a cookie sheet and flash freeze them then of course put them in freezer bags for a future meal. I add milk/butter and a little salt when whipping them and when I am ready to use just take out and put on a cookie sheet to bake at 350 for about 25 to 30 minutes........the texture is not affected from them being frozen. I sometimes towards the last 5 or 10 minutes will add a bit of grated cheddar cheese and bacon bits to the top but this isn't necessary, you can eat them as is with your meal and just spread a bit of butter on them once they are on your dinner plate.....YUMMM. Sometimes I will do extra when having potato with a meal, it is the same as cooking once but eating twice....lol.

Another interesting find on the internet was "How to make your own B Vitamins" :

My mother is definately going to try this so I will let you all know her reviews as well , hopefully within the next day or two.

Today is a rainy but mild day, I took my 3 hanging flower baskets and put outside for a bit. I really hope that I can keep them through the winter........if not then next year I will make sure that I pick up perennials as I am not sure if these flowers in which I have are annuals which usually only last for 1 year. I need to educate myself more regarding this topic as I have never had a green thumb but I would like to do a bit of landscaping to our yard next year. Our yard is ok as is but I would love to add some colour to it.

   Love Heather
